NWT Crowned City of Charlottetown Champions

Although Team NWT may have been eliminated from the playoff round at the 2009 U19 International Softball Championship in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, this did not deter the team from battling through the consolation round, where they emerged victorious.

Team NWT started off the tournament with back to back wins, but despite their valiant effort came up just shy in each of their 4 remaining round robin games, eliminating them from the 2009 U19 International Softball Championship round and placing them in the City of Charlottetown Championship Consolation round.

The team opened up the tournament with a dominating performance against the hometown favorites, the host team from PEI, with a final score of 9-3, including five runs bring scored in the 5th inning. They continued their success as they opened up with 4 in the 1st inning against Newfoundland and Labrador and continued this momentum retaining the lead the entire game for a final score of 8-5.

The bats were a little sluggish in their third game as Alberta handed Team NWT their first loss of the tournament with a final score of 4-2. The third day looked as though Team NWT were on track to start the day off with a win, but in the bottom of the 7th inning British Columbia surprised Team NWT with 3 runs to take the win. Team NWT concluded their third day of action with a battle against undefeated New Zealand. Neither team managed to score a run until the 5th where one run in each of the 5th and 6th innings was enough to defeat NWT, 2-0.

In their final game, Team NWT was trailing early by a score of 8-2 after the 4th. However, this did not discourage the team who fought back, scoring 5 in the 6th, but with the inability to score in the 7th the comeback fell short as Quebec prevailed by a score of 10-9.

Nevertheless, the team was able to right their path and was triumphant in their extra-inning battle with Manitoba in their first game of the City of Charlottetown Championship. Riding the momentum from their win over Manitoba, NWT pitcher Travis Conner pitched a complete game against Alberta in the City of Charlottetown Championship, with six strikeouts and only allowing one run on two hits. Conner's pitching performance coupled with Kirk Sangris batting three-for-four with three runs batted in and three runs score proved to be too much for Alberta.

Team NWT has much to be proud of including the fact that they had unfamiliarity to overcome as not all players were residents of the NWT. This team was comprised of seven athletes, two coaches and a Manager from the NWT, as well as six players from other provinces. The team is comprised of:

Coaches: Darren Campbell & Paul Gard

Manager: Drew Williams

NWT Athletes: Devon Chang, Chad Hinchey, Garrett Hinchey, Kirk Sangris, Ryan Sheppard, Carter Stirling & Andy Williams

Athletes from other provinces: Tyler Kuntz (ON), Travis Connor (ON), Chad Fink (ON), Connor Murphy (BC), Joel Banner (BC) & Kyle Chmarney (SK)

BANTAM BOYS GAIN EXPERIENCE

A Bantam Boys Fast Pitch team participated in the Western Canadian Championships in Winnipeg this summer. The boys from Hay River were commended by the hosting committee for their outstanding behavior and sportsmanship throughout the duration of the tournament. Although the team ended up with 1 win and 5 losses, they were just one win away from making a tie breaker playoff game. Most importantly the team enjoyed themselves and gained immense experience by attending these Championships.

NWT Softball would like to thank the team for being great ambassadors for the Territory and wish them the best of luck throughout the remainder of the season!
